NEWS / Nordic Arboretum Experts Collect Tree Seeds in Rila Monastery Nature Park
Rila Monastery Nature Park recently welcomed a team of experts from the Nordic Arboretum Committee (NAC), who conducted seed collection of characteristic tree species. The initiative aims to enrich living collections in arboreta and botanical gardens across Northern Europe.
The fieldwork was carried out along the route from Kirilova Polyana to Suhoto Lake, in full compliance with local permitting regulations and environmental protection guidelines. The team demonstrated a high level of professionalism and care for the natural surroundings.
Arboreta—although a lesser-known term to some—are specialized botanical gardens focused on trees and shrubs. They serve as important hubs for scientific research, educational outreach, and public awareness of biodiversity.
Project Participants:
-
Ida Hartvig – Arboretum Hørsholm, Denmark
-
Jaakko Saarinen – Arboretum Mustila, Finland
-
Rūta Katrīna Berga – Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia
After completing their field activities, the guests visited the Rila Monastery – one of Bulgaria’s most iconic cultural and spiritual landmarks, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The visit of international research teams highlights the exceptional plant diversity of the park and underscores the importance of preserving natural resources not only locally, but globally.
